Which door?

Four business doors, four kinds of lock

Commercial doors carry different hardware from a house. Knowing which one you have tells us which parts to load before we leave.

  1. Glass storefront

The narrow aluminum frame around a glass door usually holds a mortise cylinder with a hook bolt. The cylinder is what we rekey or swap.

  2. Office or suite

Lever handles, often with a keyed lever or a separate deadbolt. The usual setup in offices and clinics.

  3. Back or service door

Steel doors facing the loading area or the alley. A sturdy deadbolt and a latch that has to catch every single time.

  4. Business mailbox

Wall units in the lobby or the box out front. Small lock, big headache when the only key walks off with a former employee.

Business lock jobs

What we take care of on site

  • Rekey after staff changesNew pins in every cylinder you name, new keys for the people who should have them.
  • Business lockoutsShop or office opened first thing, with the owner's or manager's OK.
  • Worn cylinders swappedThe one key that only turns on the third try gets a cylinder that turns on the first.
  • Broken keys pulled outSnapped in the storefront lock at closing? We remove it and leave you a key that works.
  • Deadbolts on back doorsFitted or repaired so the bolt lands in the frame, not against it.

Have this ready when you call

  1. The business name and address, and which entrance we should use.
  2. Who is giving the OK. The owner or a manager, reachable on the day.
  3. How many locks, and which doors they are on.
  4. A quiet time. We can book before opening or after closing, between 6 AM and 9:30 PM.

The figure comes during the call, before the truck leaves. Rekeys start from $65 per lock.

Why businesses call

Six moments that turn into a locksmith visit

Most business calls start with a person, not a broken part. Keys move around with staff, and a lock is only as tight as the list of who carries one.

  • Staff

    Someone left on bad terms

Asking for a key back is awkward and proves nothing. A rekey the same week does.

  • Keys

A shift lead lost the ring

Every door on that ring is now a question mark. We rekey those cylinders and cut the new set.

  • Lockout

    Nobody can open up

The opener is sick or stuck in traffic on H-1. With the owner or manager on the phone, we get you in.

  • Door

The lock fights you every morning

A sticky cylinder gets worse, not better, and tends to quit on a busy day. Fix it on a slow one.

  • Damage

    Someone tried to force it

Report it to the police first. Then we repair or replace the damaged lock and rekey the rest.

  • New space

    Taking over a unit

Whoever ran the space before you may still have keys. Rekey before the stock comes in.

Honolulu Fire Department

Does a rekey affect the fire department's key to your building?

Yes, if the building has a key box. Some buildings keep one by the entrance: a small wall-mounted safe holding keys to the building, so fire crews can get inside during an emergency without forcing a door. The Honolulu Fire Department prefers the Knox Box brand, and its crews open the box with a universal key. Here is the catch with a rekey. The key sitting in that box stops working the moment new pins go into the lock. So when we rekey a building with a key box, we cut an extra key for it. You then call HFD Fire Operations, because the department locks the box, not you.

Business lock questions

What owners and managers ask us

What does a commercial locksmith do that a home one doesn't?

Different hardware and different jobs. Glass storefronts use narrow mortise cylinders, offices often have lever locks and back doors take heavy deadbolts. The work is rekeys after staff changes, tracking who holds which key, and timing around opening hours. On business doors we need the owner's or a manager's OK first.

How can a business tell a locksmith is safe to let in?

Watch what they ask for. A careful locksmith wants to know who approves the work before touching a business door, and gives a firm price up front. We need the owner's or manager's OK on every commercial job. Anyone who skips that step at your shop would skip it at someone else's.

What does a locksmith cost in Hawaii for a shop or office?

It depends on the door and the job. Our rekeys start from $65 per lock and lockouts start from $140. Storefront cylinders and older office hardware can take more time or parts. Count the locks before you call and we can give one figure for the whole job.
