Which key do you have?

Four kinds of car key, four kinds of job

The key on your ring decides the work. Not sure which one yours is? Describe it on the phone and we will tell you.

  1. Plain metal key

No plastic head, no chip. Common on older trucks and cars. We cut it from the door lock and it works right away.

  2. Chip key

Looks like a plain key with a thick plastic head. A small chip inside talks to the car, so the key gets cut and then paired before the engine will start.

  3. Remote-head or flip key

Lock and unlock buttons built into the head. Two parts to set up: the blade that turns the lock and the remote that opens the doors.

  4. Push-start smart key

Stays in your pocket while the car starts on a button. Nothing to cut except the small emergency blade tucked inside. All the work is the pairing.

Where keys go

Where do car keys usually get lost?

Somewhere between the car and whatever you went to do. These six come up again and again, and each one has a habit that saves time when you call.

  • Beach

    Buried in the sand

A fob slips out of a towel or a pocket and the tide does the rest. Even if you find it, salt water is hard on the electronics inside.

  • Trail

    Dropped on a hike

Keys clipped to a bag strap come loose on the way down. Note the trailhead lot and the car's spot before you call.

  • Store

    Left in a cart

Groceries in, keys on the child seat, cart pushed back. Check the cart return and the service desk first.

  • Field

    Gone at the game

A long day of practice or a tournament, keys in a sideline chair. Tell us which field or stall you are nearest.

  • Gym

    Locker mix-up

A spare left in a locker, or a bag picked up by someone else. Gyms usually keep a lost-and-found box worth a look.

  • Home

    Inside the house

It is often still at home, in a jacket or a work bag. If you need the car today anyway, a new key can be made now and the old one wiped later.

What Hawaii drives

Why does car key replacement start with the model year?

Because the year decides which key the car takes. The make is usually easy to guess here: of the 46,753 new vehicles registered in Hawaii in 2025, Toyota took 27.6% and Honda 12.4%, and the Tacoma pickup alone was 7.1% of the market. But one model can go from a chip key to a remote-head key to a push-start fob within a few model years, and each needs its own blank and its own pairing step. So tell us the year, the model and whether the car starts with a button. Then we load the right blank and programmer before we leave, and the new key gets cut and paired in one trip.

Car key questions

Before you call about a car key

What can you do if you lost your car key?

Stop searching the same three places and call a mobile locksmith with the car's model and year. We make a new key from the car's lock and pair it on site, so the car stays put. If the lost key could turn up in public, ask us to wipe it from the car.

How much does it cost to replace a car key?

Our car keys start from $140. Where yours lands depends on the key type and whether you still hold a working key. Plain metal keys are the quickest, and a push-start fob takes the most programming. You get a firm figure on the phone before we head out.

Can a mobile locksmith program a key right at the car?

Yes. Programming runs through the car's diagnostic port, so the car never moves. We do it for most push-start fobs, chip keys and remote-head keys, including the Toyota and Honda models you see everywhere here. We can also erase any lost key so it stops starting the car.

What does an ignition cylinder replacement cost?

That turns on the car, and on whether the cylinder needs a repair or a full replacement. Often a worn key is the real culprit, and a new key alone fixes it. If the cylinder is done, we replace it at the car and cut a matching key. The full figure comes on the call.
