Which door is it?

One phone call, four kinds of locked door

Each kind opens a different way, so the first thing we ask is what you are looking at. A rough answer is fine.

  1. Car

Keys or fob inside, doors shut. We open the car with tools made for door frames and seals, so the paint and the window stay as they were.

  2. House

Knob locked, deadbolt locked, or both. A knob alone is usually the quicker job. A thrown deadbolt takes longer but still opens without a new lock most of the time.

  3. Condo or unit door

Many unit doors lock themselves when they close. We open yours and leave the hardware the way the building expects it.

  4. Office or shop

We open business doors with the owner's or manager's OK. Have that person reachable by phone or there in person, and the rest is the same as any other lockout.

Lockout jobs

What a lockout call covers

  • Keys locked in the carSedans, trucks and SUVs, including push-start cars with the fob sitting inside.
  • Locked out of the houseFront door, side door or garage entry. We pick the door that opens cleanest.
  • Key snapped in the lockThe broken piece comes out, then you get a working key so the door locks again tonight.
  • Unit and office doorsCondo entries, shared hallways and suite doors, with the business owner's OK where it applies.
  • Lost the only keyOnce you are back in, we can cut a new key for that lock while we are still there.

Have this ready when you call

  1. Where you are. A street name plus the nearest corner, or a store name and the row you parked in.
  2. For a car: make, model and color, so we spot it fast.
  3. For a door: knob, deadbolt, or both locked.
  4. Anyone inside? A child or a pet in a locked car means 911 first, then us.

The price comes during the call, before the truck leaves. Lockouts start from $140.

How it usually happens

Six ordinary ways to get shut out

Nobody plans a lockout. Most of them start with a small habit, and knowing which one got you helps us bring the right tool.

  • Car

    Fob in the cup holder

Plenty of push-start cars refuse to lock with the fob inside. Not every model, though, and a weak fob battery can fool the car into thinking the key is gone.

  • Car

    Keys in the trunk

Some trunks only open from the fob or a switch in the cabin. Once we are in the cabin, the trunk usually follows.

  • House

Knob set on the way out

A push-button knob was left locked and the door pulled shut behind you. If the deadbolt was never thrown, this tends to be a short visit.

  • House

    Key broke in the deadbolt

Half the key turned, half stayed in the cylinder. We get the stuck half free, open the door and cut a replacement key.

  • Condo

    Unit door closed behind you

A trip to the trash chute or the mailbox, and the self-locking door did its job. Tell us the building and floor.

  • Office

    Shop still locked at opening

The keyholder is sick or off island. With the owner or manager on the line, we open the door so the day can start.

Hawaii households

What ends repeat lockouts in a busy Hawaii household?

Usually a keypad deadbolt. Hawaii shares its homes more than any other state: in the 2020 Census, 9% of its 490,267 households had three or more generations living together, the highest share in the country. More people means more keys and more comings and goings. It also means more afternoons when the grandparents get home at noon and the only spare is at work across the island. A keypad deadbolt gives everyone their own code, so nobody waits on the step, and any code can be changed in a minute without touching the lock. If lockouts keep happening at your place, we fit one as a booked visit, at a time that suits the house.

Lockout questions

Asked while standing outside

Will the police open my locked car for free?

Do not count on it for an ordinary lockout. If a child, a pet or anyone at risk is inside, call 911 right away, because that is an emergency and not a locksmith job. For keys on the seat and nobody in danger, a locksmith is the usual call.

How can I get into my car myself after locking the keys in?

Try the free routes first. Is there a spare at home someone can bring? Does your car's app unlock the doors from your phone? Many insurance plans and some card perks include roadside help, too. If none of that works, call us. Coat hangers and wedges tend to scratch paint and tear seals.

How much is it to get a locked car open?

Our lockouts start from $140. A car that takes more work, like one with the keys locked in the trunk, can land higher. Either way the figure comes during the call, before anyone leaves, and nothing changes at the car without your say.

How do I get back in when I've locked myself out of the house?

Walk the house first: back door, garage entry, a window that is already open on the ground floor. Do not climb anything. No luck? Ring us with the address and which locks are set. We open the door, usually without changing the lock.

What counts as an emergency locksmith call?

Any time you need in now rather than next week. A lockout is the classic one. We take those calls from 6 AM to 9:30 PM every day and give you an arrival time on the phone. Less urgent jobs, like a lock change, can go on a booked slot instead.
